Adding more raw foods into to your diet is a great way to boost your health. This means making sure the bulk of what you eat focuses on fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. With these foods as the foundation of your diet you will have more energy, lose weight and feel great. Raw foods are loaded with enzymes, vitamin and nutrients.
I am not suggesting you become a 100 percent raw foodie or adhere to strict guidelines, but rather simply incorporate more fresh foods into your diet. Even if half your meals each day consist of raw food, you are on the right track.
Five easy ways to add more raw to your diet:
1. Have at least a serving or more of fresh fruit every day: This can include an apple, pear, orange, berries or a fresh fruit smoothie.
2. Have multiple servings of fresh vegetables every day: Cut up carrots, celery, peppers, make a large dark leafy green salad or a fresh pressed green juice.
3. Enjoy a handful (or two) of raw organic nuts and seeds. Put them into a trail mix with raisins, goji berries, apricots – and you can even add some pure raw dark chocolate (cacao) into the mix.
4. Grab a bag of fresh sunflower or pea sprouts from your local health food store or farmers market, these make a great addition to salads, sandwiches, soups, stirfrys and smoothies. Or order them directly from giddy-yoyo and have them delivered to your door!
5. Get creative and try to prepare a few new raw recipes each week (check out different books, websites or videos on how to prepare things like smoothies, raw nori rolls, cookies and nut based spreads).

The Benefits of Seeing a Nutritionist!

I would like to welcome Jillian Gile – our Guest Blogger for today…Enjoy!
We all try to eat healthy, but in this day and age the amount of information available to us can be downright overwhelming. The list of must-eat and do-not-touch items can be contradictory, confusing, and misleading. On top of that, if you’re eating a diet high in processed foods, you may actually be undernourished. That is where a nutritionist comes in.
A nutritionist, or nutritional therapist, has a degree in nutrition and nutritional education. This highly qualified individual will be able to determine what exactly your diet needs, what nutrients you might be lacking, and how to improve your eating habits.
One of the biggest benefits in seeing a nutritionist is, obviously, if you’re looking to lose weight. Whether you have a slow metabolism, need calorie adjustments, or need more information on what makes a food “healthy,” a nutritionist is able to help you. Reading labels can be a good step in the right direction, but a nutritionist has expert training that can show you details you may have overlooked.
Hand-in-hand with weight loss come vegetarian diets. Many people choose to cut out unhealthy foods by simply focusing on eating only vegetarians and plant-based proteins. Celebrities tout this style of diet, but what they’re not telling you is that they have a team of nutritionists and chefs keeping their nutritional needs balanced. If you’re looking into becoming a vegetarian, you may want to schedule an appointment with a nutritionist to make sure you aren’t overlooking any important diet supplements or health issues.
A good diet can boost your immune system, cut down on sickness, and even ease PMS symptoms. Nutritionists can do a variety of tests to see what nutrients you need to bring about these changes. Diet changes can bring about a huge change for a variety of maladies, like anemia, heart disease, or digestion problems.
If you are an athlete, trying to become more active, or training for any sort of activity, a nutritionist might be able to give you the energy boost you need to reach your next goal. As you become more active, your dietary needs will change – you’ll need more calories, more protein, and maybe even more fat in your diet. A nutritionist can show you exactly how to keep up with your body’s needs.
Allergies seem like the realm of pollen and cat dander. Over-the-counter remedies abound, so why drag a nutritionist into the mix? You may not be aware that food allergies also exist, and come with symptoms far beyond sniffling and sneezing. A nutritionist will be able to improve your health and daily life simply by pointing out remedies you didn’t even know you needed. If you have any unexplainable symptoms, it might be time to see a nutritionist.
Nutritionists can also point out medicine interactions that you didn’t even know existed. Did you know that hormonal birth control can interfere with caffeine metabolism? That cranberry juice can inhibit certain kinds of infections? If you’re looking for some natural remedies, or worried about the efficacy of your prescriptions, a nutritionist can point you in the right direction for the best health.
Most of all, a nutritionist acts as a coach. They are available to teach you how to make healthy decisions, learn how to cook healthy meals, and discover healthy alternatives to old favorites. Even if you don’t have any special health or diet concerns, a nutritionist is able to provide you with great recipes that might really shake up your family meals. If you are trying to make a change in your life, using a nutritionist – in addition to seeing your doctor and even a personal trainer – can be the boost you need to really see results.

If your going to use Supplements….

I am not big on pills, supplements or vitamins. However, there are those times when our body just need an extra boost to get through a bad cold, a bout of low energy or giving our bones a little strength. So when this is the case, your supplements should be sourced from whole foods and better yet raw ingredients. When I discovered Garden of Life’s Vitamin Code raw line, I tested it out, asked my questions and felt comfortable enough that I had something that I could recommend and stand behind. I don’t “push pills” in my practice, I am a true foodie, and food always comes first. Even when I do consultations! I always provide a whole food meal plan and then make some supplement based suggestions based on what people are going through. This usually includes extra dose of pure vitamin C, iron or B- complex. But other than that it is always a well rounded diet based in loads of fruits and vegetables!
I started taking Garden of Life’s Raw Vitamin C about a month ago, and I plan to take everyday throughout this season. I truly feel that is has kept my immune system protected so far! But who knows if it’s these capsules or the mega green juices that I make in the mornings along with at least 3 more servings of fruits and veg throughout the day?
But what I do know is that ingredients are from these products are from pure organic, raw fruits and vegetables. They also contain enzymes, and probiotics which allows your body to get the most out of each capsule (which may even shorten the length of time you actually have to take them). There are no fillers, preservatives, gelatin’s or sugars added. They are not heat treated like most other supplements (sorry, I can’t mention any name brands). When you heat treat natures natural vitamins and minerals and then pack it up into a capsule, it looses all of it enzyme integrity and there is nothing left for your body to soak up. There are way too many supplements available right now that are low quality, mostly synthetic and your body excretes them faster than they are absorbed.
It is also not necessarily true that everyone needs to be on supplements every single day, but as I said – as needed. Do your research first. Don’t just self prescribe, read through the information, feel what your body is going through and take supplements accordingly. Don’t just pop something because your friend does or you heard it on TV or in magazine. Find out what YOU need first and go from there. All I am trying to show you is that better versions do exist, so if you are going to take supplements, choose WHOLE and RAW ones!
This is directly from the Garden of Life website:

Learn how to make your next Smoothie!
It’s official – making smoothies is my favourite way to start the day!
Also, with spring on the horizon, the desire to eat a heavy meal diminishes. So making a daily batch of liquid goodness seems like the perfect plan!
Not only do refreshing smoothies give you energy first thing in the morning – they are also so much fun to make. Everyday I create a new theme in my blender using different flavours and textures – but they all have one thing in common – they are packed full of raw, organic, fruits, vegetables and superfoods!
Making a smoothie is the easiest way to absorb a whole bunch of nutrients all at once. They can be full of fiber and vitamins and depending on what you put into them you can also get your daily dose of protein, antioxidants and healthy fats.
Why not indulge… and drink your next meal? What could be more delicious than a creamy smoothie that fills you up and gives your body the nutrition and vitality that it requires to thrive? There really is no better answer…so let me tell you five simple reasons why you should be making smoothies and blending your way to health!
Time Saver – Smoothies take all of 5 to 10 minutes to make (depending on how prepared you are), can be taken on the go and will last all day in a stainless steel bottle.
Easy to Absorb – Liquids are easier to digest and allow nutrients to absorb into your cells for immediate uptake.
All -in -One – You can get a “whole” lot of goodness into one blender – Vitamins, protein, carbohydrates and fat!
Super Fun– Enjoy the “process” and get creative with colourful ingredients and textures (add granola and eat it with a spoon!)
Liquid Energy – Use superfoods to give you a boost (no booster juice!!!). Make your own blend and enjoy in the morning, afternoon or pre/post work out!
You are in luck because I have provided simple steps on to make the perfect smoothie every day.
How to blend your way to health:
These can be made in any blender (but a Vitamix or BlendTech are highly recommended!).
- Start with 2 cups of liquid – rice milk, almond milk, hemp milk or coconut water
- Choose your protein (2 tbsp. or more)– raw brown rice protein (I like Sun Warrior), hemp protein, hemp hearts or almonds
- Choose your fruit (1/2 – 1 cup of either)– blueberries, raspberries, banana, mango, avocado or dates
- Choose your green (one handful)– spinach, kale, chard, sprouts, cucumber or (1 tsp) greens powder, spirulina or chlorella
- Choose your superfoods – (1 tablespoon of one or more) goji berries, cacao nibs, maca, mesquite, hemp seeds, raw honey, chia seeds or matcha green tea
Have fun and get creative!

Boost Yourself Up – Naturally!

What to do, what to do – get the flu shot or not…I can’t give you the answer but what I can give you is some insight as to how you can boost your immune system and stay healthy during this vulnerable time of year.
I am not going to get into a whole discussion of why I disagree with the flu shot. It is not fair – there are at risk populations and situations that people strongly feel they need to get it. Great, I am not going to argue. However – my concern is that there isn’t enough research out there on the flu shot – but there is valuable and vital information on how you can boost your immunity and stay healthy naturally.
So here are some tips to keep things boosted up!
1. Eat Plenty of fresh organic Fruits and Vegetables - they contain high doses of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes some key players are : broccoli, kale, sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, berries and citrus fruits
- Some extra special additions are garlic, ginger and onions – these guys contain naturally occurring properties that fight off infection and help to keep your immune system strong
- Manuka Honey is also super important – it is antibacterial and tastes delicious!
2. Take an extra dose of Vitamins and Minerals ( I am not one for supplements – but this is the time to use them!) : Vitamin C, Echinacea, Sambucol, Vitamin D, Zinc, Deep Immune
3. Drink your greens and eat Superfoods – Vitamineral Greens, E3 Live, Vega, Camu Camu, Goji Berries
4. Keep your body Moving – get into the routine of doing regular physical activity (yoga, pilates, resistance training, running, kettlebells, swimming team sports etc..). Moving your body will help to keep your lymph flowing and allow “stuff” to move through your body. Exercising also makes you feel good!
5. Make sure to get lots of Rest – try to get at least 6-8 hours of rest every night. If you like to nap, take a quick power nap mid afternoon to keep you rejuvenated and fresh (I wish I could nap!)
6. Drink lots of fluids – Keeping your body hydrated will help to flush toxins out of your system and keep your cells happy. Herbal teas (ginger, hibiscus, echinacea, nettle, dandelion, astragalus, reishi mushroom) lemon with warm water and lots filtered water are a great way to get started!
It doesn’t take much to keep your body healthy. So whatever you decide to do – that is your choice. Just remember – that just because you get the flu shot – it doesn’t mean you can’t get the flu. So be sure to do whatever you can to boost your immunity on your own – these remedies work and have worked for decades. There was a time when flu shots didn’t exist – but natural remedies did! So go back to the roots of nature and stay healthy!
Super Immune Boosting Drink
